Tantobie Records was established in 1999 to
issue the recordings of singer songwriter Jez Lowe around the world. Initially based in
Azusa in Southern California and managed by Jez's longtime business partner Andy Smyser,
the label was a success from the start with the September 2000 release of the double CD
set LIVE AT THE DAVY LAMP. The label has maintained a policy of an album per year
since that time, including two brand new releases (HONESTY BOX and DOOLALLY) and two
reissues (1986's TWO A ROUE and 1998's THE PARISH NOTICES - THE ART EDITION). A soundtrack
album, FIGHTING THE TIDE was released in 2002 and another re-issue, 1996's TENTERHOOKS
will be released (also subtitled THE ART EDITION) in summer 2005, following Tantobie's
acquisition of the rights to Jez's recordings originally released on the American label
Green Linnet.
In 2004, following Andy Smyser's departure from
the company, Tantobie relocated to a base in England, and 2004's release DOOLALLY was the
first release under this new regime. A branch remains in the USA, under the direction
of Tim Readman of Big City Promotions, a Vancouver-based production company, which
oversees Jez's US and Canadian tours. The website at www.jezlowe.com
is the umbrella internet presence for all aspects of Jez Lowe's business affairs,
including his publishing company LOWE LIFE MUSIC, his touring company BAD PENNY TOURING,
his newsletter THE MIDNIGHT MAIL and of course TANTOBIE RECORDS.
Tantobie Records have worldwide distribution
through Proper Music Distribution of London England, with local distributors around
the world including Burnside and Sidestreet in the USA, and availability through
Feathers and Wedge and Folk Trax in Australia. Digital downloads are available
through CD Baby of Portland and Mix and Burn of Minneapolis USA.
Tantobie have also released a series of
exclusive promotional 5-track CDs to coincide with Jez's hectic touring schedule around
the world. So far three of these items have been issued to DJs and press, though none are
available for sale to the general public. They consist of songs from Jez Lowe's vast
repertoire of original songs, recorded live in concert. More will follow and media
recipients will be notified in due course.
The name - Tantobie is a small village in County
Durham in North East England, and was the birthplace of the celebrated 19th Century
songwriter and poet Tommy Armstrong, hailed by Ewan Macoll as "The father of modern
protest", and celebrated by Jez Lowe in the song "Armstrong's Army" on the
2002 album HONESTY BOX. It was also the birthplace of Jez's own father, John Lowe.
