Comments: Hi There!I just wanted to say that I was lucky enough to catch the concert by Jez & The Bad Pennies in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania this past February. As a life-long fan of the country music, I had my doubts about this band from the north of England and, in fact, I sort of had my arm twisted to go to the show -- but WOW! What an outstanding concert! I am now a big fan - and I hope to see you in these parts again soon.

I have just recently been introduced to your incredibly beautiful music. "It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives."

I am really looking forward to seeing one of your live performances before too long. Have you ever considered a trip to Tofino on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada? We could take you camping! You'd love it here!!

Many thanks! Sharon

PS: Is there a Jez Lowe fan club? If not, let's start one!! Cheers!

Comments: I,ve only just become aware of Jez's music via a young friend of mine who shares a Hospital Radio programme with me. She played "Midnight Mail" from the CD Bad Penny. I fell in love with it and soon after heard "Dandelion Clocks" which I loved even more. I askesd if I could borrow the CD to listen to and discovered a whole world of beautiful, funny and sensitive songs. "London Danny" is possibly the most beautiful and simple love song I have ever heard. You can be sure I'll be catching up with the rest of Jez's music as soon as I can. Lorna, my oppo on Hospital radio and I do a folk programme every week and Jez is always featured somewhere in the programme.

It was great to see you again at Trowbridge - especially on the smaller stage. It was a shame that you were on so early on the larger stage, and that the crowd's spirits were a little damp from the rain. Thanks for 'London Danny' - or 'Dunny!' - great to hear it again.

Loved the sets you did and couldn't help but jig around at the back of the venue... toe-tapping never stopped and cd has been on incessantly since! Pleasure to meet you all and wow, what a pipes player! Simply jaw-droppingly superb. Vocals were wonderful and well, the whole kit and kaboodle (good name for a cd that)... just brilliant! Can't wait to see you all in action again! Next time will have to grab some poor unsuspecting bloke to whirl around the dancefloor! Cheers!

I was at St Francis in the year below you and remember you and Ged Foley very well. I used to go to Seaham folk club and you gave me a lift back one night after we left early 'cos the artist was a bit Barry Manelow!
Thanks for a great night and I'll be listening to you on the CD we bought.

Comments: Saw Jez and the band last night for the first time in many years at the Willows folk club in Arundel. A great set including lots of the old stuff - Galloways, Another Man's Wife, Black Diamonds, Durham Gaol, High Part of the Town, Dover Delaware. The new songs from Doolally were great too - Sugar Water Sunday, Regina Inside and one from the play with Kate which I think was called All trawl and no tickle (?). I had hoped they might do Mothers Day given the anniversary of John Lennon's death - alas no. Andy May was great too. He played a brief solo spot on the pipes. Last time I saw the band, Bev and one of the Surgeoners were still in it. I loved that line up. This one is very different but just as wonderful in different ways. If you do get a chance to catch them live, do grab it - while the CD's are great they can never catch the sheer magic of Jez and the band live and up close. Roll on next time!

Comments: Hello Jez and Bad Pennies!
Just returned from your performance at Bromsgrove Folk Club, 28 10 04.
This was amazing! I don't have the words to do you justice. Music like this touches me in a way nothing else can. You have a talent for producing songs that I cannot describe. I saw you last over ten years ago- (at the Hop Pole!) I'm ashamed to admit I don't have any of your cds so I haven't heard songs of yours since then, and yet I was instictively able to remember what was coming in all the songs I'd heard before. A talent like that cannot be acquired. Amazing!!!!
(PS: I'm sorry that I cracked the case of the "honesty box" CD- Rest assured I will buy a copy on mail order as soon as I can afford it!!!)

Keep up the good work!

Comments: i was first introduced to you in westborough massachusetts USA, in 1985 (or 84)you were playing with jake walton and we got a lesson on the hurdy gurty(?is that right?)hadn't seen you since, untill last winter , down here in olde cape cod, woods hole, massachusetts. I'm sure you must remember the freeze and all those bearded sweater wearing intellectuals "letting their hair down" -but just once a year! Anyway, my family has been playing your cds out, your music is part of the family, we've gotten much enjoyment from it, and we can't wait to see you again, hopefully with the band, but solos great too. take care, andrea

Comments: Well it looks like I might be back to Rotherham
to see you play LIVE at THE ROTHERHAM SHOW on the 11th to 12th September 2004 I think?? As I've run out of CASH here in Denver, Colorado: A local musician is helping me out thank goodess. He says he's written a song about me??? He plays for a local band here in Denver. How about playing the song "A Lass To Want Me" at The Rotherham Show???
As I've not heard that song played for a bit. It was a song that you wrote for me about 11 years ago I think??? For that Documentary "Songs For David" "Against All Odds." on YORKSHIRE TV.

Southern idiom yields 'spitting image'
August 1, 2004

Q: When I was little, everyone told me I was the spitting image of my dad. It used to drive me nuts, but now, years later, I'm more interested in where the expression "spitting image" comes from. Can you help? —E.B., Pittsburgh, Pa.

A: The original phrase is "spit and image," meaning, as the present phrase does, "a person strikingly like another person." The phrase developed from a use of the noun "spit" to mean "a perfect likeness."

This sense of "spit," first recorded in 1825, still occurs in British English but has fallen into disuse in the United States. It apparently developed from the familiar verb "spit" by way of a once popular saying that a son with a great resemblance to his father looked as much like him as if he had been spit out of his mouth. (Why being spit out of your father's mouth would make you look like him is a question we can't answer.)

Not everyone accepts the above explanation. Some have claimed that the phrase is actually a corruption of the phrase "spirit and image," pronounced by Southern speakers in such a way that "spirit" came eventually to be understood as "spit." It may be that some such process had an influence in the ultimate development of the phrase, but lack of evidence makes it impossible to say that for certain.

"Spitting image" was first recorded in 1901.

Other variants, now extremely rare, are "spitten image" and "splitting image." For a time, "spitting image" was commonly cited as an error, but it has long since established itself as a standard, if somewhat informal, phrase.

Comments: I am writing to say what a great concert you and the Bad Pennies did in Edmonton on Nov. 9, and am apologizing on behalf of my ciy for the poor turnout. Edmonton usually does a great job at supporting the arts in all forms, and this was not what we are normally capable of. As an avid concert and theatre goer, I did not see any advertizing about the performance, and had I not got my card in the mail, would have sadly missed it. Hope we get a chance to redeem ourselves!!

ps - love the new c.d.!!

I Enjoyed the evening at the Wayfarer 2nd November 2002 and bought the Davy Lamp (live)double CD. If you heard any of the music in the interval from the lounge, I played harmonica to "Sally Free and Easy". I play a lot of Dylan at our folk evenings.
Hope to hear you again in the future and I'll look out for "Bad Penny" which you recommended.

All the very best to you all.

I saw Jez and the Bad Pennies at the Byron Bay Blues Festival in Australia last Easter for the first time, and ever since then the various CDs have been on the CD player at least once a week. I am currently in Solomon Islands, but the sounds of Jez' catalogue waft through the tropical air on a regular basis.

We bought 2 cd's and play them daily in our mix of music and look forward to getting more of his music. There was a song he sang that didn't appear on any of the cd's for sale at the concert that I hope has been recorded - something about Driving..... I hope he sings it again so I can do better at identifying it!! It was hilarious nonetheless....

Glad to recieve the card saying he is coming back!!! We will be there!

Comments: Doug and I are fans of Jez Lowe. We were fortunate to hear him the first time in our hometown of Louisville, KY when he played at the Rudyard Kipling. We have friends in the Celtic group "Galloglas" who told us about him. Then we traveled to a college campus in Indiana to hear him a second time. His music is delightful. We are planning a trip to Great Britain during the Christmas holidays. It looks like he will not be playing during our trip which is between December 20 and January 3, 2003. We would like recommendations about individual musicians and/or clubs, pubs, etc, where we could go in the UK to hear good music like his.

Comments: Hi Jez:

My husband and I got introduced to your' music just by chance by getting a short demo cassette at another concert we attended last year in Peterborough, Ontario (Canada). We were instantly hooked!
There are some of the songs that were hauntingly familiar to me at first listen...it was like deja-vu, and reminded me of music I heard while growing up in Nova Scotia. I received a copy of "Live at Davy Lamp" for Christmas, and it's all I listen to! (Even my two youngsters sing along to many of the songs). Keep up the wonderful work, and please come back to Peterborough soon...we'll come see you for sure!

It will only be available at concerts or through mail order until March of 2001, when we will make it available through the traditional distribution channels (other online sites or regular retailers.)
